1 Arrive Casablanca, Morocco
Situated on Morocco’s Atlantic coast, Casablanca pulses with a modern energy, yet traces of its romantic past still linger. Amid the city’s bustling port and sleek skyscrapers, the Hassan II Mosque stands out as an awe-inspiring landmark.
Get under the skin of the city with a savvy local guide able to take you to the most magical corners of the city, starting with the vast Hassan II Mosque with its soaring minaret. The sensorial overload that is Habous Market provides a marked contrast, a public space filled with the vivid bustle of everyday Moroccan life. Later, in Fez, settle into your hotel, a traditional riad originally built for the noble Fassi family.
Nestled in the fertile Saïs Plain at the foot of the Atlas Mountains, Fez is a medieval maze of ochre alleyways bustling with commerce, unchanged for centuries. Wandering these labyrinthine streets offers a glimpse into Morocco’s enduring soul, where traditions are not only cherished but continue to thrive.
Morocco has an extraordinary legacy of arts, and today is all about making. In the morning, learn to make (and then eat) delicious Moroccan bread and cookies with a dada baker. Later, a master artisan guides you and your family through making, decorating and playing your own drum. Fez, home of Moroccan handicrafts, is the place to learn pottery, too: get your hands dirty learning to make traditional pots with a local artisan.
Rising out of a plain outside the imperial hilltop city of Meknes, the ancient Berber-Roman ruins of Volubilis come as a surprise. Once a thriving Roman outpost, today it’s an atmospheric site of triumphal arches and basilicas, and vividly preserved mosaics depicting tales of the gods.
Rabat, Morocco’s capital on the Atlantic coast, exudes sophistication with its blend of historic and contemporary elements. Discover the 12th-century Hassan Tower and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, the last sultan of Morocco. In the Oudaya Kasbah, wander through narrow streets adorned with blue-and-white houses, relax in the serene Andalusian Gardens and take in panoramic views of the Atlantic from the Kasbah's ramparts.
Framed by the rippling High Atlas Mountains, the Red City exudes romance. Its medina is a warren of subterranean galleries, rooftop restaurants and exquisite riad hotels, while Djemaa el-Fna, Marrakech’s main square, is alive with the action and energy of vendors, fre-eaters, snake charmers and street musicians. Explore its fabled, labyrinthine souks, their bustling alleyways brimming with fabulous souvenirs. Later see Marrakech's streets in a vintage sidecar alongside your professional driver to Dar El Sadaka, French visual artist Jean-François Fourtou's enchanting, sculpture-filled home.
Venture out into the medina; pick vegetables and learn to cook tagine with a local chef on a farm; and head out on camel or quad bike into the surrounding desert, dining under the stars to finish.
